Joyce Dove was born July 15, 1947 in Sodus, New York to the late Mattie C. Lawson-Buchannan (Tat) and late James Davis Dove. She attended school 26 elementary and graduated from East High School. Joyce was the oldest of nine siblings known as the “Tat” kids.
Joyce had multiple cleaning jobs to provide for her four children. Joyce made sure that her children wanted for nothing, especially giving special care to her daughter Theresa Ann. They were inseparable. Joyce ended her employment at the Holiday Inn the 80’s. Joyce was a mother to many children in the neighborhood and a wonderful support system for her family and friends. One of her brothers nicknamed her “Big Mama” because she truly took over being the Matriarch of the family once their mother passed. Joyce was known for telling you what was on her mind along with sharing pearls of wisdom, even until our Heavenly Father called her home. Joyce enjoyed listening to Blues and Southern Soul music. She could chair dance with the best of them, shaking her head and popping her fingers doing the old-time dances from the waist up…Joyce enjoyed being around family laughing and having a good time.
Joyce earned her wings on April 9, 2023. She is predeceased by her long-time partner Bennie Johnson, daughter Theresa Ann, son J.J Johnson and two brothers, Charles, and Albion Hall. She leaves to cherish her memory: sons and daughters, Freddie F. Johnson, April T. Dove, Kizzie T. Johnson, Billie, Brenda, Kelly, Nikki, Ben, Brishay, Norman, Benji, Shaheim, Jason, John and Jimmie Johnson.
